Self Reflection
In this essay I discuss the different the different course objectives ive accomplished throughout the semester giving differente examples of activities made in class and especific assignments that helped me accomplish these objectives.
[One of the learning objectives I consider I have accomplished is “Recognize the role of language attitudes and standards in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users”. Writers like McNeil and wolfram helped me get an understanding of the ways people use to compare one language or dialect to the other and deciding that one which one is better]. The people who consider themselves as superior compares all the other races and their language to themselves and assume one is better than the other depending on which one is closer to what they consider standard, this creating a hierarchy where they put themselves on top and whatever is different from them its below. [Robert Mc Neil show us how people discriminate grammar errors according with who says it and that people care more about who is speaking and how are they speaking than their actual ideas]. How language have been a way to oppress us and its used to discriminate and create a perception of a person how was seen in his example of social media and tv shows portraying different races with certain traits.[wv1]
Another objective accomplished during this course was “ explore and analyze in their own and others writing a variety of genres and rhetorical situation” where we would identify the rhetorical devices of different writers to get a better understanding of it. One of the accomplished objectives that helped me the most was “develop strategies for reading, drafting, revising, and editing” where throughout all the phase essays we reviewed each other essays and gave feed back so we can revise it and edited if necessary. When we learned how to “practice systematic application of citation conventions” we had a library session where we were shown the different types of citation for all the different situations, we were also given tools like web pages to apply citations correctly. We also learned how to “ recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations” when we explore the different rhetorical devices and also persuasive devices, and identifying the purpose and the thesis of writings by Lippi Green and Wolfram.
Another objective accomplished in this semester is “develop and engage in the collaborative and social aspects of the writing processes” we had group discussions where we would take different writers and act like them using our knowledge of them and their position towards certain topic. Also when we give each other feedback to improve our writing on the different phase essays. Another accomplished objective is “ understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences” when we learned how to approach different audiences using different kinds of language and also by identifying the audiences of certain writers based on the media they used to publish their writing. When we accomplished “ locate research sources (including academic journals articles, magazine and news paper articles) in the library’s databases or archives on the internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, and bias.” We had a library session where we learned how to identified useful sources for our REE and also learned about peer reviewed articles and how to use the city college data base.
